Introduction

My name is Sam Gennett and I am in the midst of my last year at Lewis University in obtaining a B.A. in English with a concentration in Creative and Professional Writing, along with a minor in Film. This is my blog for all of the things that I write and dabble with in my Senior Seminar class where we are helping to propel English Studies into the technological age, the core concept of the class, by creating a blog for our responses instead of the hundred-year-old task of printing out a piece of paper and handing it to our professor. We're adapting to the age of information and, best of all, GOING GREEN!

Project progress report

Last week, I met with my faculty advisors for this project, Dr. Consilio and Dr. Simone. I haven't done much tangible work on my project as it's only been a week, but I have a much clearer idea of the direction that this project is going to take after discussing it with my professors. I came to the realization that my proposal was a bit all-over-the-place and didn't have an evident concept to it. When I had initially written my proposal, I was heehawing between working with my chapbook from Creative Writing, or my editor's manual from Jet Fuel Review because those are the two experiences during my four years at Lewis that have had the most lasting impression on me and solidify where my interest lies in the field of English Studies. Literary Computing: A Helpful Tool or One Step Closer to Blade Runner?

The first known usage of computer-assisted literary study took place in the 1960’s where they converted a text into an electronic version and used the new medium to detect strings of words and patterns—essentially what English scholars do during a close reading of a text, except with a little helping hand from technology. Over time, this method evolved and now literary computing has become more prominent, especially with the rise of technology in every other aspect of society. Some might fear that literary computing will antiquate the study of the literature, however, the computer is merely a tool without any ability to analyze a text; it points out patterns on the surface of the text and it’s still up to the reader to analyze those patterns in order conclude how they create meaning.
